How to Stay Cool Camping in the Summer

How to Stay Cool Camping in the Summer

Summer camping is one of life's great pleasures — but rising temperatures can turn a dream trip into an uncomfortable ordeal. Whether you're car camping at a state park or backpacking deep into the backcountry, staying cool is key to enjoying every moment. Here are our top tips for beating the heat on your next summer adventure.

1. Choose Your Campsite Wisely

Shade is your best friend in summer. Look for campsites nestled under tree canopies or near natural windbreaks. East-facing sites get morning sun but stay shaded in the hottest afternoon hours. Avoid open, exposed sites that bake in direct sunlight all day.

2. Time Your Activities Strategically

Plan strenuous hikes and activities for early morning or evening when temperatures are cooler. Use the midday heat (typically 11 AM–3 PM) for rest, swimming, or relaxing in the shade. This not only keeps you cooler but also protects you from peak UV exposure.

3. Stay Hydrated — More Than You Think

In hot weather, you can lose water rapidly through sweat. Drink water consistently throughout the day, even before you feel thirsty. Electrolyte packets or sports drinks can help replace minerals lost through sweating. Avoid alcohol and excessive caffeine, which can dehydrate you faster.

4. Wear the Right Clothing

Opt for lightweight, moisture-wicking, and light-colored clothing that reflects sunlight rather than absorbing it. Loose-fitting shirts and pants with UPF protection are ideal. A wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses are essential gear for any summer camper.

5. Use Cooling Gear

Modern camping gear has come a long way. Consider packing:

  • A battery-powered or solar fan for your tent
  • A cooling towel — soak it in water and drape it around your neck for instant relief
  • A portable misting bottle for quick cool-downs
  • A hammock — sleeping off the ground allows airflow underneath you

6. Optimize Your Tent Setup

Tents can trap heat quickly. Set up your tent in the shade and keep the rainfly off when weather permits to maximize airflow. Open all vents and doors to create cross-ventilation. If possible, use a tent with mesh panels. You can also drape a reflective tarp over your tent to deflect solar heat.

7. Cool Down Before Bed

A warm sleeping bag is the last thing you want in summer. Switch to a lightweight sleeping bag or liner rated for warmer temperatures. Take a cool (not ice cold) shower or rinse off before bed, and use a small battery-powered fan inside your tent to keep air moving through the night. Don't forget to swap out your regular bedding for cooling sheets — moisture-wicking, breathable fabrics like bamboo or microfiber help regulate your body temperature while you sleep, making a huge difference on hot summer nights. 8. Find Water

Camping near a lake, river, or stream gives you a natural cooling station. A quick dip in cool water can dramatically lower your core body temperature. Even soaking your feet or wrists in cool water provides fast relief on a hot day.

9. Watch for Heat-Related Illness

Know the signs of heat exhaustion (heavy sweating, weakness, cold/pale skin, nausea) and heat stroke (high body temperature, hot/red skin, rapid pulse, confusion). If anyone in your group shows these symptoms, move them to shade, cool them down immediately, and seek medical help if needed.
