Our Favorite Outdoor Destinations for the Culture

Our Favorite Outdoor Destinations for the Culture

The outdoors has always been ours — we just haven't always been told that. From the Great Smoky Mountains to the Gulf Coast, Black and melanated outdoor lovers are exploring, camping, hiking, and fishing across this country in ways that are rewriting the narrative. Here are some of our favorite outdoor destinations that hit different when you're going with the culture.

1. Shenandoah National Park — Virginia

Just a few hours from major East Coast cities like D.C., Baltimore, and Richmond, Shenandoah is one of the most accessible national parks for Black families and outdoor lovers on the East Coast. The Skyline Drive offers stunning Blue Ridge Mountain views, and the trails range from easy walks to challenging summit hikes. It's a great first national park experience and a solid base for a weekend camping trip.

Best for: Families, first-time campers, road trippers

2. Gulf Islands National Seashore — Florida & Mississippi

White sand beaches, emerald green water, and shaded campgrounds right on the Gulf — this one is a hidden gem. The Florida district near Pensacola is especially popular and easy to access. You get the beach experience with the camping vibe, and it's far less crowded than the typical tourist spots.

Best for: Beach lovers, families, summer trips

3. Congaree National Park — South Carolina

One of the most underrated parks in the Southeast, Congaree protects the largest intact expanse of old-growth bottomland hardwood forest in the US. It's quiet, intimate, and absolutely stunning — especially during firefly season in late May and early June. If you want to unplug and truly connect with nature, this is the spot.

Best for: Nature lovers, photographers, solo adventurers

4. Assateague Island National Seashore — Maryland & Virginia

Wild horses roaming free on a barrier island? Yes, really. Assateague is one of the most unique camping experiences on the East Coast. You can camp right on the beach, watch the famous Chincoteague ponies wander through your campsite, and kayak through the back bays. It's unforgettable.

Best for: Families with kids, beach campers, kayakers

5. Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore — Michigan

For those in the Midwest, Pictured Rocks is a must. Colorful sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, and Lake Superior beaches make this one of the most visually stunning destinations in the country. Summer is the best time to visit — kayak the cliffs, hike the North Country Trail, and camp under the stars.

Best for: Adventure seekers, kayakers, hikers

6. Stone Mountain Park — Georgia

A classic for families in the South, Stone Mountain offers camping, hiking, a laser show, and tons of activities for kids. It's a great entry point for families new to camping who want amenities close by. The summit hike is accessible and rewarding, with panoramic views of the Atlanta skyline on clear days.

Best for: Families, beginners, weekend getaways

7. Big Bend National Park — Texas

If you're ready to go big, Big Bend is one of the most remote and spectacular parks in the country. Dramatic desert landscapes, the Rio Grande, hot springs, and some of the darkest skies in the US make this a bucket-list destination. It rewards those who come prepared — bring a solid power station, plenty of water, and a sense of adventure.

Best for: Experienced campers, stargazers, desert explorers
