Why More Black Women Are Hitting the Trails

by Keeya McSwain on Jul 03, 2026
Why More Black Women Are Hitting the Trails

Something powerful is happening on America's trails, campgrounds, and waterways. Black women are showing up — in hiking boots, with backpacks, on kayaks, and around campfires — in numbers that are growing every year. And it's not a trend. It's a movement.

Here's why more Black women are hitting the trails, and why that matters for all of us.

Reclaiming Space in the Outdoors

For generations, the outdoors has been coded as a space that wasn't "for" Black people. From the history of sundown towns to the lack of representation in outdoor media, the message was clear — even if unspoken. But Black women have always had a relationship with the land. From farming to foraging to fishing, that connection runs deep. What's changing now is the visibility.

Communities like Outdoor Afro, Black Girls Hike, and Brown Girls Climb have created intentional spaces where Black women can explore nature without feeling like outsiders. And social media has amplified those voices, showing the world that the outdoors belongs to everyone.

The Mental Health Connection

Study after study confirms what many Black women already know intuitively: time in nature reduces stress, lowers cortisol levels, and improves mental health. For Black women who carry the weight of systemic stress, caregiving, and the emotional labor of navigating daily life, the trail offers something rare — quiet, space, and restoration.

Hiking, camping, and time outdoors aren't luxuries. They're tools for healing. And more Black women are claiming that tool unapologetically.

Community Is the Catalyst

One of the biggest drivers of this movement is community. When you see someone who looks like you on the trail — thriving, laughing, leading — it changes what you believe is possible for yourself. Group hikes, camping meetups, and outdoor clubs led by and for Black women have lowered the barrier to entry and made the outdoors feel welcoming in a way it never did before.

If you're looking for your people, search for local chapters of Outdoor Afro or Black Girls Hike in your area. You might be surprised how close they are.

You can also join the Melanated Outdoor Mavens — a private Facebook group for melanated ladies who love the outdoors and want to hike, camp, and explore with a like-minded community. It's a welcoming, supportive space to connect, share tips, and plan adventures together. Request to join the group here.

Gear That Works for You

Part of feeling confident on the trail is having the right gear. You don't need to spend a fortune to get started — but you do need gear that's reliable, functional, and built for real outdoor use.

You Belong Out Here

If you've been thinking about getting outside but haven't taken the first step — this is your sign. You don't need to be an expert. You don't need expensive gear. You just need to start. Pick a local trail, grab a friend, and go. The outdoors will meet you where you are.
